Lacuna Coil - Visual Karma (Body, Mind and Soul)

Does Lacuna Coil really need an introduction at this point? They've been around for a while, although they arguably exploded into the international spotlight when Evanescence's debut prompted people to go searching for other gothic metal bands with female singers. (Guilty as charged; I discovered Lacuna Coil, along with The Gathering and Tapping the Vein, thanks to a Revolver article on just that topic.) A few years later, they released Karmacode, to mixed reviews. And now, another couple years later, they're gearing up for a new release in 2009 called Shallow Life. Oh, and let's not forget having master track versions of "Closer," "Swamped," and "Our Truth" available for various incarnations of Guitar Hero and Rock Band. What's a band to do in the meantime? Release a concert DVD!

Not content to just release a single concert, Lacuna Coil outdid themselves by releasing a fairly impressive 2-disc package, and an even more impressive 4-disc package that I unfortunately did not get my hands on. The 2-disc package includes footage from two live shows, four music videos (all from Karmacode), one-on-one pieces created by the band members themselves, behind-the-scenes footage, and some fan-made content.

The concerts themselves are well done. The bulk of the live footage comes from a performance at Wacken 2007, covering primarily music from Karmacode but throwing in a couple from Comalies and "Senzafine" from Half Life and Unleashed Memories. The lighting effects are unnecessary and a little odd given that it was a daylight performance, but otherwise it's everything you would expect from a concert video--various shots of the band members moving around stage, lots of footage of the (insanely large Wacken) crowd, stage banter... The second show, from Japan's Loudpark 2007, hits several of the same songs popular songs in the shorter set but adds "Daylight Dancer" from Comalies. The sound is mixed very well, and for the most part the songs transition well from the record to the live performance. It sounds to me like Cristina takes a minute or so to really find her voice as they launch into "To The Edge," and Andrea never really finds his; on the other hand, I've never been as much a fan of Andrea's vocals in their two-vocalist attack, so maybe I'm biased. Regardless, even just for the two concerts, this package is worth the price, and the four music videos on the first disc only improve that value.

The second DVD is somewhat of a mixed bag. First, there are the band member films: Cristina talking about working with a project to bring wells to villages in Africa; Andrea and Cristiano Migliore giving video tours of places in Italy; the two Marcos making very comical films; and CriZ giving a demonstration of various martial arts forms he practices. They're worth checking out once or twice; Marco Biazzi dating his guitar is definitely worth re-watching. Then there are the four behind-the-scenes clips, including the Australian and Japanese tours and recording videos for Our Truth and Closer. The tour bits are a lot of meet-and-greets and touristy pictures. The video recording was interesting to see, but the weird thing (to me) is that both videos were recorded with the band performing at double speed. Must've been necessary for some slow-motion effects. Finally, there's the fan content section. First, the band had a contest for fan content for the DVD, so there are 10 videos ranging from a film of the guitarist messing up an acoustic performance of "Heaven's a Lie" to a girl getting a tattoo of the Lacuna Coil LC logo on her wrist. Then they double up a photo gallery with the top three fan remixes of "To The Edge," two of which were pretty good and one of which was a techno remix that just didn't do it for me. There's also a short interview with somebody from the fan site Empty Spiral. And the final bit, which was incredibly frustrating, is finding a passcode to get into the (woefully content-lacking) "Inside The Spiral" site for information about the upcoming CD.

As I understand it, the 4-disc version includes a 5.1 mix of Karmacode on DVD-Audio, which wouldn't have done me any good since I don't have anything bigger than a 2.1 system, and an audio CD of the Wacken performance. If you can track it down, go for it. The 2-disc set is quite good on its own though--like I said, it's probably worth it just for the two live shows, and the music videos, band videos, and other extra content are entertaining for at least one or two viewings. Adding up to nearly 4 hours of footage, this is a great package whether you're a big fan or just a casual listener who hasn't gotten a chance to check them out live.
