The 12 tracks on Themata are a pleasing mix of progressive hard rock with just enough alternative thrown in to keep the songs fresh and give them a distinct melodic sound. There will be people saying these guys are just another Tool knockoff but after listening to the disc a few times that comparison fades and you realize Karnivool is its own beast with its own personality and separate a musical vision.
All 12 songs are worth listening to as Ian Kenny's clean vocals pair well with Drew Goddard and Mark Hosking's guitars, Jon Stockman's base and Steve Judd's hammering drums. A couple of my favorite tracks would have to be "Themata" the title track, "Roquefort," and "Scarabs" which is kind of a white knuckle instrumental.
The members of Karnivool have a reputation of putting on a spectacular live performance and after touring for a couple months in the U.S. they have announced the Aeons Tour where they'll be playing shows from April 20th through the beginning of May all in the Aussie area. As for any new music, in a magazine interview Goddard has stated that a new album could be coming out in 08 and it will be a huge step up from Themata.
