Queens Of The Stone Age - Era Vulgaris Review
by Dan MacIntosh
.
You can't take Queens Of The Stone Age for granted, but you shouldn't take them completely seriously either. Leader Josh Homme is one smart cookie, yet that never stops him from having a lot of experimental fun in the studio. This recorded Era Vulgaris may not appear in any history books, now or in the future, but it nevertheless sadly summarizes our current vulgar Lindsey/Paris/Britney age.
This so called "Vulgaris" "Era" opens with a lumbering track called "Turnin' On the Screw", which starts with a T.Rex-y drum intro before chugging into a Led Zeppelin misty mountain hop groove. The pedal's to the metal with "Sick, Sick, Sick", which is nearly punk rock. The disc's clear highlight is "Battery Acid", however, because on it Homme brags of having "battery acid in my veins". Furthermore, its guitar groove is impossible to forget.
Although "Battery Acid" easily excels in the old artistic acid test, there are also many other aural pleasures to enjoy along with our friends The Queens. These highlights include Homme's jazzy vocal on "I'm Designer" and the wonderful spelling of the soulful "Make It Wit Chu".
The animated light bulbs on the CD cover and the matchbook cartoons - along with the accompanying corny match jokes on the back -- foreshadow this CD's lighthearted lyrical approach. Ah, but what a joy it is to hear drama-free lyrics over boot-stomping electric guitar crunch ever once in a while. At its best, this music makes Era Vulgaris seem like some new golden age.
