Steve Khan - Borrowed Time Review

by Sherrill Fulghum

.
This Grammy nominated jazz guitar player did not begin playing guitar until he was 19, after admitting that he was a bad drummer. Since that time Steve Khan has performed with jazz and rock artists like Donald Fagan, Miles Davis, James Brown, Aretha Franklin, Chaka Kahn, Lou Rawls, and Quincey Jones. Khan first appeared on an album 1974 with his first solo album in 1980. Since that time he has recorded over 20 albums. His latest musical offering is "Borrowed Time" a collection of nine tunes lasting over an hour. Khan's "Borrowed Time" is an offering of progressive style jazz that while recorded in a studio takes on a live feel since all of the pieces are over seven minutes long with some of them lasting over 1p minutes like in a live show when artists share the stage with band members and perform short solos and improvisations only Khan's band plays all together.

Eight of the nine pieces are typical jazz instrumentals; the lone song is a beautifully written Spanish piece "Luna Y Arena" - Moon and Sand - which is a pleasant surprise in amongst the progressive jazz instrumentals.
