Scissors for Lefty - Underhanded Romance Review

by J Simpson

.
There seems to be a bit of excitement rumbling out of the Bay area for a band known as Scissor for Lefty who are coming off a successful tour supporting their first album and have just released their second offering "Underhanded Romance". The group is composed of two families the Krimmel brothers and the Garza brothers with a Garza uncle thrown in to boot. Started in 2000 in the college town of San Louis Obispo, CA the band now fittingly calls San Francisco home. Taking their time in putting out their first disc the band released "Bruno" in 2005 and quickly began to build a fan base touring the UK supporting big acts like Arctic Monkeys and Dirty Pretty Things plus several large and small festivals. Now in 2007 the band has rolled out their sophomore effort titled "Underhanded Romance".

In this 2nd contribution of 11 tracks the group has turned up the fun with their playful indie british pop/rock grooves. The compilation is chocked full of stylish melodies among very danceable rhythms and house party noises. You will also notice some quirky, whimsical synthesized textures scattered throughout the collection which just adds to its playfulness. A couple of the standout tracks would be "Lay Down Your Weapons" which includes a kind of electric kazoo sound or "Next To Argyle" a poppy love song.

One of the most important aspects of Scissor for Leftys music is that the group clearly sounds like they are enjoying themselves and they're not hiding it. The band comes forth as a fun loving carefree crew that doesn't take themselves too seriously which makes this disc an enjoyable listen.
