R. Kelly - Double Up Review
by Dan MacIntosh
.
Only R. Kelly and Snoop Dogg can take a song about threesomes ("Double Up"), and make it sound like an innocent Bubble Up soda commercial. But if you follow the news, even a little bit, you're aware there's nothing at all innocent about R. Kelly. Heck, there's little G-rated about Snoop Dogg for that matter. But you may slug yourself for singing along with this randy new collaboration. The man may believe he can fly, but R. Kelly's songs are far more hellacious than heavenly on this new effort.
One track, titled "Real Talk", is particularly profanity-laden. I chuckled first, and then turned it way down low in my cubicle at work. And when R. Kelly, T.I., and T-pain warn, "I might be with your chick," you best believe them. These guys talk dirty and back up those foul words with honest-to-goodness dirty living.
It is obvious R. Kelly desires the same street credibility afforded Nelly and Chamillionaire, both of whom are guests on the CD. He's pictured on the cover with a black hooded jacket, with diamond studding all around his outfit. He's also pictured within the CD booklet with multiple hotties (and no, they don't look obviously underage).
Who knows, maybe this work will earn him the respect he so obviously craves. Nevertheless, I love the sweetness in his voice on tracks like "I'm A Flirt", which rides easily over an old school soul groove.
But any outspoken flirt, like R. Kelly, who is this intent on doubling up, is not exactly boyfriend material. That makes R. Kelly's sweet talk just about as convincing as his gangsta rap costume on the CD cover. He's only flirting with sincerity.
