The Payola Reserve - 200 Years Review

.
This album begins with "Grade A Television," which of course prompts the question "Does such a thing exist?" The melody of this tongue-in-cheek reminds me of both Neil Young and The Band.

"Jugband Joan" is a romp heavily influenced by bluegrass and roots rock. The energy in this song is pretty incredible. If you don't get your toes tapping to this song, I'm not sure what it would take to get you moving.

The Payola Reserve manages to create a very vintage sound. This band with the organ and harmonica, sounds very much like a band that might have come along in the mid-to-late seventies. More specifically, The Payola Reserve could easily have been one of the guests to appear on The Last Waltz. Each song is a rich combination of excellent songwriting ability, complex melodies and solid rhythms. The band alternates between the energy of "Around That Long" and the mellow mood of songs like "Going Army" and "All Things Are Better in Heaven." Ben Pranger's vocals sound familiar, but it's not necessarily easy to place why. He sounds at times like a young Elvis Costello. At other times he sounds familiar but I can't place who he reminds me of.

If I had to compare this band to one other band, it would be The Peach Truck Republic. Both bands are steeped in the southern/roots rock sounds made famous by The Band and others. Both craft really strong songs that are complex in structure but easy to listen to. If you are looking for some vintage-sounding roots rock, this is definitely an album to check out.
