Once Soundtrack Review

by Dan MacIntosh

.
The movie Once has garnered rave reviews for its truthful portrait of survival in the music business. But it's easy to pick up from the film's soundtrack that there is also a romantic relationship at the heart of this story.

The movie's lead is played by Glen Hansard, the real life lead singer of The Frames. Although Hansard sings the lion's share of these soundtrack songs, his love interest, played by Marketa Irglova, also contributes mightily to the finished product.

Hansard is at his angriest on "Leave," which finds him nearly shouting these words: "Leave/Let go of my heart." Hansard's anger also comes through loud and clear during "Say It To Me Now", which features Hansard sounding much like David Gray over the track's acoustic guitar.

Irglova joins Hansard for the sad and slow "If You Want Me", while the male/female group Interference performs "Gold". Interference's nicely acoustic guitars, violin, and cello sounds make their track come off like another Hansard/Irglova duet. Strings are fit well when applied to "Trying to Pull Myself Away", which incorporates a fuller pop-rock arrangement than most of other music on this disc.

Making love work, as well as making it in the music business, are two of the hardest roads any human can walk. The music of Once will likely make your feet blister with empathy for these onscreen strugglers.
