Ocean Street Review

by J Simpson

.
The self titled debut CD released by Alabama's own "Ocean Street" is a very impressive piece of work. The album was originally dropped in Sept 2006, subsequently Ocean Street remixed, remastered and re-released the disc in Jan. 2007 through their own independent label. Meanwhile Tinderbox Music a promotion company based in Minnesota has taken on the job of getting the group noticed and into the mainstream which is becoming easier than expected in this cruel world of music.

Fronted by vocalist Andy Kropf, Ocean Street is a southern pop/rock grassroots style band formed in 2003 after Kopfs stint in the Detroit Tigers farm system didn't pan out. The groups members appear to have the recipe for quality songwriting mastered. The tracks on the album flow seamlessly with appealing melodies and tempos bringing the feel of a very accomplished veteran band. Kopfs vocals are soulful but at the same time strong and pleasing with honest lyrics we can all identify with. The musicianship is first rate as the quintet shines bearing radio friendly very catchy tunes with danceable rhythms throughout the collection. The first song "Till I'm Gone" shows you right off the bat what you're in for with this album. The song highlights all the aspects of Ocean Streets skills, melody driven guitar hooks, tempo guiding drums & piano, each playfully complimenting Kropfs prominent singing. The package is all wrapped up and produced by Ocean Streets own drummer Brian Stephens who has done a very commendable job.

Although Ocean Street is listed as indie pop rock on their myspace don't be surprised to hear a couple of these numbers on country radio stations. All of the 13 songs are as addictive & singable as can be and each tune is worth including on your iPod. I myself am already looking forward to the next disc from these young skilled musicians.
