Monterey International Pop Festival Review

by Sherrill Fulghum

.
On a California summer afternoon in 1967 some of the stars of the day along with others soon to be stars some of whom are no longer with us gathered to hold a rock concert a full two years before the famous Woodstock concert and across the country.

"The Monterey International Pop Festival" is a two CD collection celebrating the fortieth anniversary of that now famous music event.

Among the collection of songs taken from that historic event are some rare and previously unreleased early performances by musicians who are considered legends in the music world today; among them Jimi Hendrix, Simon and Garfunkel, Jefferson Airplane, and a young unknown named Janis Joplin.

For rock fans who love history, those who want to remember the early days of rock, or anyone who longs for the old days of music; this two CD collection of music from the very first "Monterey International Pop Festival" is a must.

Artists included on the album are The Association, The Animals, Simon and Garfunkel, Big Brother and the Holding Company featuring Janis Joplin, Country Joe and the Fish, The Paul Butterfield Blues Band, The Electric Flag, Hugh Masekala, The Byrds, Jefferson Airplane, Booker T and the MGs, Otis Redding, Ravi Shankar, Buffalo Springfield, Scott McKenzie, The Mamas and the Papas, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, and The Who.
