Mae - Singularity Review

Mae is a group comprised of intelligent Christians, like Relient K and Switchfoot before them. In other words, this is not a group singing Jesus' name all the time, and thus pandering to the readymade Christian community. Yet unlike the aforementioned Switchfoot and Relient K, this group does not make as compelling a case for its faith.
The CD booklet includes a few spiritual deep thoughts. "Where does the physical meet with the spiritual? Is this the typical question? But down below and up above it looks the same. So I'm not sure of anything. Where will love come from again?" (These words are taken from the track "Reflections"). But whereas Switchfoot can take such wordy wonderings and turn them into catchy tunes, Mae places this similar material inside ponderous instrumental tracks. And brainy titles like "Sic Semper Tyrannis" do not help their cause.
Furthermore, Switchfoot couches its songs in beautifully crunchy electric guitar songs. Mae, however, fills out its compositions with way too much nerdy keyboard. Although Singularity doesn't add up to a winner CD, there is still one singular great song. Unfortunately, it also comes toward the end. "Home" not only speaks convincingly about heaven, but it also uses keyboards effectively - giving this meditation on life after death a sense of mystery.
If I could give Mae just a few bits of advice, I'd tell them to turn up the guitars, lay off keyboards, and give simple hard rock a good honest try. I doubt they'll listen to me. But that's my two cents at least.
