Grant-Lee Phillips - Strangelet Review

.
This album is pretty much what you'd expect from Grant-Lee Phillips. He sings introspective, poetic lyrics, with an easy voice that is easy to imagine hearing in your local coffeehouse, or even on your local street corner a la his recurring role on Gilmore Girls.

As usual for Grant-Lee Phillips, he gives you more than just the standard guitar, bass and drums. Phillips plays a baritone ukelele, and Peter Buck makes an appearance with an 8-string ukelele on "Fountain of Youth." The album also features a string quartet on "Dream in Color," "Same Blue Devils," and "Killing a Dead Man." As if that weren't enough, "Dream in Color" features a French horn.

The best way for me to explain Grant-Lee's music is that it is both utterly familiar, but unique. I realize that doesn't make a terrible amount of sense, but that's just how good Grant-Lee Phillips is as a songwriter. He arranges songs just differently enough that even though you feel you've heard his sound before, you can't place just where. This is another strong effort from a grossly underrated singer-songwriter. Grant-Lee Phillips fans, I don't think you'll be disappointed.
