The RIAA have compiled their list of the biggest selling artist of the 20th Century. The number one band is no surprise, The Beatles come out on top with sales of over 106 albums in the US. That makes them the only band to ever receive the RIAA's Diamond award. To Qualify an artist must sell 10 million copies of five separate albums. The White album, Abby Road, Sgt. Pepper's, 1962-1966, and 1967-1970 brought home the Diamonds for the fab four. Elvis is on the list also as the artist with the most gold and platinum albums. The King captured 80 gold and 43 platinum albums. Garth Brooks is the biggest selling male artist. He is also the only solo artist to receive a Diamond Award. He had sales of over 89 million albums in the US. Alabama was named the largest selling Country Group of the Century. The woman we love to hate here at antiMUSIC is the biggest selling female artist. Yes it is none other than Babs, Barbara ( I threw a fit because I wanted to sleep in the White House) Streisand. She sold almost 69 million albums. The biggest selling album..... It's not Michael Jackson's thriller. No, country rock legends the Eagles grabbed that honor with their album "the Eagles' Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975". They have sold to date a staggering 26 million copies of the album. Jackson however had the largest selling studio album by a solo artist. Elton John's saw an opportunity with the tragic death of Princess Diana and captured the largest selling single of all time honors with his remake of "Candle in the Wind". which sold over 11 million copies in the U.S. The list continues.... the largest selling debut album honors go to Boston with their self titled release. Whitney Houston nabbed two categories, the biggest selling soundtrack with "The Bodyguard" and the largest selling female R&B performer. Boys II Men are the top selling R&B group. TLC were named the largest selling Hip-Hop group. So there you have it, the biggest sellers of the Century. |
