Jan 3, 2002 - Soundscan released their year-end music industry report today which features the top selling albums of 2001 as well as genre and record company market share data.
Soundscan was launched in 1991 to track point of sales data for music. Linkin Park�s debut album �Hybrid Theory� lead sales for 2001 with Soundscan reporting sales of 4,812,852 units during the calendar year. Shaggy�s �Hotshot� claimed the number two spot with sales of 4,507,568 units. N Sync�s �Celebrity� rounded out the top 10 with 4,421,231 units sold.
Album sales down in 2001.
According to the Soundscan report,
�Total album sales for 2001 were 23 million less than total album sales
for 2000. The top 10 selling albums of 2001 accounted for 20 million units
less than the top 10 selling albums of 2000. Sales of all albums
outside the top 10 accounted for the remaining 3,000,000 unit difference.�
Platinum Album sales up, Gold Sales Down.
Platinum album sales were up in 2001 with 100 albums showing sales of 1 million units or more. In 2000 Soundscan reported 88 albums with million plus sales. Gold album sales for 2001 were less than 2000. In 2001, 187 albums sold 500,000 units or more compared with 202 album titles going Gold in 2000.
