Singled Out: Jetty Rae's Queen of the Universe
.
Singer-songwriter Jetty Rae recently released her new single "Queen of the Universe" and to celebrate we asked her to share the story behind the track with us. Here is the story: I'll never forget the first time I played "Queen of the Universe" for my dear friends Ayrik and Josh. They were blown away, much to my surprise. This was a song that very easily could've never seen the light of day had it not been for that first reaction. I penned this song as a joke, and emotional release for a dear friend of mine. There was family drama, and lot's of manipulation and game playing going on and my friend was deeply hurt, and felt pretty betrayed. Being the oldest in my family, I pretty much adopt anyone close in my life as a little brother or sister--I'm always the protector, and I feel a certain affinity to make people feel safe, valued, and cared for. This song was my way of helping my friend blow off some steam. We had some good laughs over the line about giving this person a good spankin'. It's larger than life song, and the character although partially inspired by real life, is fictional. This song will resonate with anyone who knows what it feels like to be in a relationship with someone who throws their weight around in a manipulative fashion. After playing the song for my producer Mitch Dane, he was pretty excited about tracking it--but honestly I had no intentions of having this song on the record. After my amazing studio players played two bars, I was HOOKED. Chomping at the bit to get in and lay down some vocals, I finally heard what everyone else had heard. Being such a serious person in my music, I've always felt that my songs needed to have a certain spiritual and emotional depth--which is why I was so reluctant to release and sing this one. But we can't be serious all the time. There will be lots of time for tears and feelings. For now, pour yourself your favorite drink, put on your leather jacket, and kick start that Harley ;) If you are already tired of the Christmas music and need to jam out to something a little more lively and soulful at your ugly sweater party, look no further. Behold, Queen of the Universe, an entirely sardonic song that almost never was. Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen for yourself and learn more about the album right here!
