(Radio.com) He played the Goblin King in Labyrinth, but could he have played Gandalf as well? It almost happened, according to Dominic Monaghan, the actor who played the Hobbit named Meriadoc Brandybuck in the Lord of the Rings films. The actor says he witnessed Bowie audition for a role in the films.

Speaking with Huffington Post, Monaghan recounted the moment he finished auditioning for Lord of the Rings at London casting agency Hubbard's. Afterwards, Monaghan was asked to stick around for a few minutes and receive feedback. From there, things took a memorable turn.

"As I was reading a magazine waiting, David Bowie came in and signed his little list and went in," Monaghan recalled. "And I'm assuming he read for Gandalf. I can't think of anything else he would've read for." Read more here.
