Singled Out: Darling Down's Never Tell

Today Darling Down guitarist Dustin Claud tells us about the inspiration for the title track to their album "Never Tell" and the story that the song tells. Here is the story:

"Never Tell" is all about keeping secrets. We all have a few secrets to hide from the world for one reason or another. There are those people in your lives that try and pry the "dirty" details for gossip purposes and so on, but sometimes they have to stay hidden to the grave.

Thinking about these secrets to myself I said out loud, "I'll never tell", and a light went off in my head immediately. I knew I had a new song. When I write songs I build the story like a movie in my mind, that's where it begins. If I don't like the movie I throw it out in start over. I started brainstorming. "Ok who keeps secrets-why do they keep secrets-the most important secrets, and at what lengths will they go to to remain secrets.

That's when I immediately knew it needed to be some sort of spy/agent type of story to really grasp the importance and concept of what I wanted to say.
With the story still being written in my mind, and some written notes here and there, I decided to create characters, and try and create real depth into the backstory.

So originally I pictured Amanda(our singer) as some sort of agent/spy who either stole something or knew something of high importance. She then is kidnapped and taken to a dark, abandoned place. Preferably an empty warehouse on the neglected side of town where no one goes. Tied to a chair where no one can hear her scream she is tortured and severely beaten by an enemy or rival gang/crime family or government agency. Unsuccessfully they fail, and in her resiliency she escapes and takes out everyone in her path. That's how "never tell" was born.

Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen for yourself as you watch the video here and learn more about the band and the album right here!
