Kenny G Says He's Partially Responsible for Starbucks' Frappuccino
. (Radio.com) Up to this point Kenny G's legacy has been that of the biggest-selling instrumental musician--and that smooth jazz guy your mom is sure to like--but that could potentially change, as Kenny G claims to have inspired Starbucks' Frappuccino. How could that have possibly happened? Well, aside from the fact that Kenny hails from Seattle where the coffee chain started, his uncle had given seed money to Starbucks chairman/CEO Howard Schulz and introduced the two. "I met Howard, [and] I don't know anything about coffee but Howard--charismatic, smart--he just had this energy and I go, 'I don't know what he's really talking about when it comes to coffee, but this is a winner,'" he told Bloomberg. Though Kenny didn't invest in the company, he at least claims to have the bragging right to shaping their menu. That includes suggesting that Starbucks create their own sweet blended drink similar to a popular one Coffee Bean had at the time. "At the beginning, Starbucks didn't have anything but coffee," he recalled. "And there was another company, Coffee Bean, that had something called 'blended' that was a sweet drink and people were lined up around the block. And I would always call Howard and say, Howard, there's this thing that they do there that's like a milkshake or whatever. And so I think that I--part of the reason that they did Frappuccino was people like me giving them that kind of feedback. So I would like to think that I was partially responsible for that."
