As Comicbook.com points out, it appears as though Ayer worked with Leto to combine many incarnation of the Joker to come up with this new, modern, yet darker take on the familiar character. The gloves, the hair, tattoos and skin tone, all appear to be inspired by different iterations of comic book super-villain.
