Chris Martin Declines Hometown Honor

10/13/2014

(Radio.com) Much like in the U.S. how we give a key to the city as an honor, in Canada, the United Kingdom and Australia, they offer "freedom of the city." This is a high award, given for a particular support or dedication to the city in question. In the case of Coldplay's Chris Martin, that city is Exeter, in the U.K., and in this unique case, he has politely declined.

Exeter is the town in England where Martin grew up, attended prep school, and formed his first band - and in the city's eyes, this is enough to award Martin the honor.

But Martin sees things differently, as reported by the Western Daily Press, with the Coldplay frontman leaving the possibility open for the future, but declining for now, saying he "has not yet done enough for the city." here.
