Singled Out: Torrential Downpour's Satan, Whatever
. The idea for "Satan, Whatever..." was actually just a test demo our bass player, Matt Cece was working on when he was experimenting with the program EZ Drummer. It sat on the shelf for a little bit but when we started working on material for the next album this demo was revisited. We added a few sections and then fleshed out the overall structure. I think the reason this song is more straight-forward in its approach, compared to our more complex compositions, is because this song was originally intended as test demo and not intended on becoming a Torrential track. However after hearing the test track we saw the potential it had to be a full blown TD song. Once the song was locked structurally, I worked out all the vocal patterns. Generally I like to get my phrasing and timing down first before penning lyrics. Because of the raw stripped down approach of "Satan" I decided to hold back on vocal effects to match the stripped down style of the song. Like most of our material, "Satan" didn't truly get fleshed out until we got into the studio to record it. We recorded at Backroom Studios with Kevin Antreassian, who is a good friend of the band. We love working with Kevin because he genuinely gets invested in the material. He's great for bouncing ideas back and forth with, and really pushes bands to give their best performances for the recordings. We recorded "Satan...Whatever" as part of our upcoming album "Truth Knowledge Vision" to be released on June 10th. It probably comes off as our most metal song on the record and it rounds out a uniquely diverse record that we are extremely proud of. The song title was actually proposed to us by our friend Dan the drummer for DRX while we were on the road with his previous band So Is The Tongue back k in 2012. We had been performing the song live for a few months but since we didn't have official lyrics for it yet, it remained untitled. While on the road with Dan we asked him if he could come up with a name for it, being it was his favorite song from our set. Without pause he replied "SATAN, whatever..." and the rest is history! Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen for yourself and learn more about the album right here!
