(Radio.com) The Tupac biopic, which is slated for release next year, has found a new director. Sort of. The latest hire just so happens to be the guy who was originally supposed to take the job, John Singleton.

The director-known for his films Boyz n the Hood, 2 Fast 2 Furious and Poetic Justice, which starred Tupac and Janet Jackson-has not only signed on to direct the untitled film, but will produce and rewrite the script for the project. The movie is believed to follow the L.A.'s rapper life from his rise to being one of the most popular hip-hop artists to his 1996 murder in Las Vegas.

"Tupac was the guy who I planned to do a lifetime of films with," Singleton told Variety. "His passing deeply affected my life as well as countless people in this world. His life story is as important to my generation."

They are still working on casting who will play Tupac in the film, which is slated to start shooting in June. Singleton isn't the only big name attached to the film.
