Metallica Defied Chinese Ban

(TeamRock Radio) Metallica were banned from performing classic track Master Of Puppets during their recent visit to China but guitarist Kirk Hammet cheekily played a snippet of the opening riff for fans anyway.

Western acts touring the Communist country are obliged to submit the lyrics to every song they've written before authorities will give them permission to perform. Master was one of the tracks Chinese bosses refused to allow.

But Hammet says: "I had an open guitar solo thing where I just sit there and riff I played the riff for Master Of Puppets and a couple of other songs that weren't allowed to be played. "I played just the music I kind of snuck it in there."

Despite the restrictions, drummer Lars Ulrich says it was a worthwhile trip. "What we're talking about here is not a secret," he says. "They published it on government web sites, what songs we could play and what we couldn't." more on this story
