Singled Out: Doreen Taylor's Judgment Day
. I can recall sitting on my sofa watching TV and saw a commercial depicting the December 2012 Mayan calendar "end of the world". It was an amateurishly drawn cartoon explaining that the earth's gravitational pull would just end and we would all float up into space. I remember just laughing and laughing at the stupidity and simplicity of this commercial, but as I started thinking about it more I started really internalizing what it would mean if the world really did end. All of a sudden I picked up a piece of paper and pen and the words and melodic line started flowing out of me like I was almost possessed. I started writing a tale from my perspective, watching TV and seeing a preacher (aka the commercial) warning us of the end of the world. I started creating this preacher in my mind and I could hear his words. "Your time is done. He's going to end all your fun. We must prepare for Kingdom Come. Well it's time to profess the Lord will clean your mess today.THIS IS OUR JUDGMENT DAY!" I really started to wonder, "What if that commercial was the truth and the rest of us are just too ignorant to see it?" I started thinking of all the disasters that occur day after day- "I've seen hurricanes, floods, murders and despair. Perhaps it's just his way of telling us BEWARE! ". However, I didn't want the song to be religious in nature and I didn't want to quote the Bible or recite scripture. It isn't that kind of message. Although the song really has a very dark, depressing tone on the surface, deep down I wanted to share my message of hope that it is never too late to change things and that we are worth fighting for. No matter what will happen, will happen and we are useless to try to change the outcome. The only thing we CAN change is how we treat each other and the time we have on this earth while we are here. No one knows when our day is done so choose to live life with love and respect while you are here. I created the lyric and the melody. I then took what I had to my co-collaborator on my "Magic" album, Joe Mass who created the gorgeous harmonic textures and instrumentation within the song. Together we created one of my most favorite tracks to date and without a doubt one of the ones that I am most proud of on many different levels. Hearing is believing. Now that you know the story behind the song, listen for yourself and learn more about the album right here!
