Black Francis Rock Opera

(Gibson) Pixies frontman Black Francis (aka Frank Black, nee Charles Thompson) will soon be bringing to life a long undead monster of silent film by way of an original rock opera.

The Golem Rock Album, to be released November 16 exclusively through the Black Francis website, takes as its source material The Golem, a classic 1920 silent film that tells the story of a giant clay warrior who is created to defend the people of Prague's Jewish ghetto. In the film, as on the album, the lumbering Golem is not so easily controlled, and a good deal of carnage ensues.

Black Francis's musical interest in the Golem tale began when he was asked to create a score to be performed for a 2008 screening of the film at the San Francisco International Film Festival. The material has not been performed live since then, though Black Francis did record the work with producer and longtime collaborator Eric Drew Feldman. That recording of the score was released as a double album earlier this year, but on the forthcoming album BF has shaped and refined the material into a stand-alone rock opera that tells the Golem tale through dramatic tunes such as "Bad News," "Meet Me at the Ghetto Gates" and "You're Gonna Pay." - more on this story
