(Gibson) Rock and Roll lost a visionary and a pioneer on Friday. Captain Beefheart (born Don Van Vliet) died December 17 of multiple sclerosis. He was 69.

Captain Beefheart, a friend and collaborator of Frank Zappa, recorded 12 art rock albums from 1967 to 1982. Beefheart's groundbreaking 1969 album, Trout Mask Replica, produced by Zappa, is considered an art rock classic with its surreal fusion of imagery, sounds and musical genres.

Van Vliet forged a successful career as a painter after quitting rock and roll in 1982. According to Entertainment Weekly one of his paintings had recently been priced at $40,000. more on this story
