Green Day Lands at No. 1 With 'American Idiot'

(antiMUSIC) Green Day not only scored the No. 1 spot in the U.S. for their new album "American Idiot", they also had their biggest selling week in history. The group's fifth studio album sold 267,000 units its first week out and beat their previous first week sales for "Warning" by 111,000 units. 

Fans had to wait four years for this release, but in this case absence made the heart grow founder, giving the group their first No. 1 album. Green Day kicked Nelly down the charts. Last week the rapper held both the No. 1 and No. 2 spots for his releases "Suit" and "Sweat".  Nelly's "Suit" dropped one spot to No. 2 while "Sweat" dropped down to No. 4.  The No. 3 spot went to country star Keith Urban for his latest "Be Here". 

The top 5 was rounded out by Tim McGraw's "Live Like You Were Dying". 

Chevelle had a strong opening for the follow up to their platinum selling "Wonder What's Next". Their new album, "This Type of Thinking (Could Do Us In)" sold 89,000 units its first week and landed at No. 8. 

Shadows Fall received their highest chart position with their new album "The War Within", which entered the charts at No. 20 after selling 39,000 units its first week in stores. 

There were other rock debuts this week.  John Fogerty landed at No. 23 for his new album, "Deja Vu All Over Again", selling 37,000 units last week. Elvis Costello & the Imposters rounded out the Top 40 with their new one, "The Delivery Man".
