Max Roach RIP

(CMJ) Max Roach, one of the most prominent jazz percussionists of the past half-century, passed away last night in his sleep at his home in New York City. He was 83.

A progenitor of the bebop movement, in his six-plus decade career Roach worked with the likes of Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker and Charles Mingus, the latter of whom he founded the now defunct Debut Records with in 1952.
