Everyone Fakes It |
New York Daily News reports: In the world of video-driven pop stars - from Janet Jackson to Britney Spears - it's a given that the performers can't sing and dance hard at the same time. Earlier this month at an awards show, Elton John ridiculed Madonna for cheating her fans by lip-syncing during "live" shows.
What's less commonly discussed, or accepted, is the rash of enhancements used at rock shows. Even a group as respected as U2 clearly needs synthetic help to boost its three spare musicians.
As Rolling Stone editor Joe Levy explains, "When bands go on tour, they often use anything from an added rhythm track to a keyboard player hidden under the stage. The drummer can trigger samples from his drum kit, the guitarist can hit a pedal that adds a guitar part.
But Levy believes music fans should grow up on this issue.
"If people are shocked and disappointed by this, they ought to get a look at what the girls in Playboy look like before they airbrush them," he says.
"All entertainment involves some kind of enhancement." [see full story for more including details on the various types of "enhancements" artists use live]- Click Here for the Full Story

More Ashlee Denials |
antiMusic reports: Ashlee dismissed the charge of lip syncing when Today Show's Katie Couric questioned her about it. "I was singing with the track. Like on the first song. I was singing with the track but my voice was not strong enough to hold up the song alone," Simpson said.
When asked what the audience hears when a singer uses a backing track, Simpson responded "You hear both [the singer and the backing track]. The sound bites fade in and out depending on how your voice is. I have never done it before. . . . My drummer, who I love and adore, accidentally pressed the wrong button."
Simpson seemed shocked at the controversy surrounding the mishap, " I am not anorexic. My boob didn't pop out. I am not on drugs. I had a bad performance and I got sick." [see full story for more]- Click Here for the Full Story

FCC Feedback on Local Radio |
Future of Music reports: [A friend sent this along from a musician's organization. It deals with providing feedback to the FCC as they look at localization standards for radio. What that means is making sure radio stations serve the local community. The full story link will take you to an online form where you can submit comments to the FCC.] On July 1, 2004, the FCC issued a "Notice of Inquiry" (NOI) on localism in broadcasting. This NOI is part of the FCC's broader Localism Task Force - an initiative that grew out of the contentious media ownership proceedings of 2003 during which millions of citizens filed comments at the FCC on the state of their local media. http://www.fcc.gov/localism/
Since issuing the NOI, the FCC has been collecting comments from stakeholders and members of the public on localism in radio and television. Considering how important access to radio is for musicians, we think it's essential that musicians, performers and citizens weigh on this topic by submitting a written comment to the FCC before November 1.
Why Comments Matter
Past experience and conversations with folks at the FCC have taught us three things:
1. that comments CAN make a difference in the proceeding -- just look at what happened with the media ownership debate;
2. that the FCC wants to receive comments that are "empirically based", productive, and that address the questions posed in the NOI;
3. that form letters and postcards are not given the same consideration as a unique comment from someone. - Click Here for the Full Story
