Greg Shaw RIP
Bomp.com reports: "I guess I'd most like
Bomp to be remembered as a label utterly dedicated to the people who care
most about music: the fans and collectors."
--Greg Shaw
1949-2004
We have some very sad news to report-- Bomp's founder, Greg Shaw, died on Tuesday, October 19, from heart failure at the age of 55. Greg's lifelong devotion to discovering, raving about and releasing authentic -albeit obscure- rock & roll, and promoting rock fandom over four decades was extraordinary. Among his many accomplishments were fanzine publisher, magazine editor, band manager, author, indie label owner, and rock historian. Though his roles often varied, two things were absolutely consistent: his impeccable taste in music and the ability to be there first.
Though we grieve for him now, please know that Greg's legacy is the Bomp/Voxx records he was so proud to release, as ever they will be in print and available to inspire music lovers everywhere through the efforts of his business partner, Suzy Shaw, and Alive/Total Energy's Patrick Boissel.
However you choose to honor Greg's memory-- do it with anything but a moment of silence.[see full story for Greg's full biography to see just how much of a visionary he was ]- Click Here for the Full Story

Outkast Football Aftershow
MTV reports: Outkast's Big Boi is trying
to single-handedly save the struggling football program at Middle Tennessee
State University. According to NCAA rules, in order for a football program
to remain in the top I-A division, it must average 15,000 fans a game.
MTSU has averaged only about 14,000 for their first two home games. So
the college scheduled a free Big Boi concert immediately following this
weekend's home game against Idaho. The only catch students must first
sit through the entire game.- Click

MSN Radio Theft?
Reuters reports: MSN Radio, operating
within the Microsoft Windows Media Player 10, offers more than 1,000 Internet
stations patterned after terrestrial stations. Additional stations are
being quickly added.
MSN is using the call letters and often even the slogans of broadcast stations to describe its Web offerings, all of which are free. (A premium version can be purchased for $4.95 per month.)
Web browsers, for example, can choose stations that are described as being "just like" adult-contemporary outlet WLTW New York or modern rock KROQ Los Angeles. Using monitored airplay data licensed from Nielsen Broadcast Data Systems, the Web stations play virtually the same songs as the stations they are modeled after. Wes Borland has posted an update on his forthcoming solo effort, it is

Weiland Vs Writer
Blabbermouth reports: VELVET REVOLVER
frontman Scott Weiland has posted the following message on the group's
web site:
"To Jeffy: Just when I thought it was safe to go back into the shark-infested waters of the once respected world of rock and roll journalism, I meet Jeffy. At the end of the interview, I give him a rare compliment about the integrity of his magazine, saying how much I like Classic Rock; it's an actual music magazine for music fans. Jeffy took this as a sign of weakness. He uses it as my final quote to close his piece on me, alleging that due to my 'nice boy' demeanor, I must not be quite the legend that he was hoping to talk to. I live my life: 'musician', 'junkie', 'artist', 'friend', 'ex-felon', 'father', 'husband', 'rock star'. Who are you? A man so desperate to take a sincere rare compliment after the completion of an interview and use it against me? I still like Classic Rock magazine, and Ross Halfin, legendary photographer, way out of your league, but as for you? Where's that f***ing fly swatter?" - Click Here for the Full Story

Keenan Says Censorship Inspired
New CD
New York Daily News reports: Maynard James
Keenan noticed something troubling every time he gave an interview in the
wake of 9/11.
"Anytime I spoke my mind about politics or this administration, it was edited out," he claims. "Nothing I had to say on those subjects was ever used."
That the subject of the interviews was his art-metal band A Perfect Circle and not the state of the world may have had something to do with this. But the result made Keenan angry enough to find another way to get his views out.
His tactic? To create a full album of political songs, timed to hit stores at an opportune moment - Election Day. [see full story for rather extensive article and interview]- Click Here for the Full Story
HammerFall Almost Done With
New CD
Day in Rock reports: [Oscar Dronjak passed
on the following good news to HammerFall fans on Friday]
As I write this, we have only half a day of recording left, doing the backing vocals. For the past seven weeks, we have been hard at work on this, our fifth studio effort, and it's wonderful to be finished! When I have a bit more distance to the recordings, I will try to describe the contents so you will know what to expect in March. However, I can safely say that if you are a fan of HammerFall, you will not be disappointed this time around, either. We poured our hearts and souls - as well as blood, sweat and tears, mind you - into the production of this record, and I definitely think it shines through: the music is more alive than it ever has been before. should happen...
"Yeah, we've talked about it, me and some guys, and it's a pie-in-the-sky idea, but it's something that could happen and should happen somewhere and chances are there will be a virtual one first. Somebody could run one with strict voting and similarities to how the regular Hall of Fame works. It's a good idea and I think it should happen. Queen Lose Case
Ananova reports: The three surviving members
of Queen have lost a court case concerning copyrights in Germany because
they failed to convince the court that they were British citizens.
Brian May, Roger Taylor and John Deacon sued a German record company and its manager after the label granted a licence to a third party to release a 1977 live recording of the song We will rock you.
The band claims the company had no authority to grant the licence.
The band members should be able to sue the company under German law because as EU citizens they must be treated the same as Germans - but the court in Cologne threw out the case and said the three men had not presented "suitable evidence" that they were British.
