Elton Vs Madonna
antiMusic reports: Elton was in London,
accepting a song-writer award from Q magazine when he went on the warpath
against Madonna who was nominated for "Best Live Act" award (she lost out
to Muse).
Sir Elton's temper was on display when he launched into his tirade, "Anyone who lip-synchs in public on stage when you pay 75 pounds to see them should be shot."
Then Elton turned up the heat with and outburst that makes Bono's accidental "f-bomb" blurt at an awards show seem like child's play. "Madonna, best f***ing live act? F*** off! Since when has lip-synching been live?"
"That's me off her f***ing Christmas card list but do I give a toss? No," Elton concluded. [see full story for more, including the Madonna camp response]- Click Here for the Full Story

Country Music Causes Suicide
tinfoil reports: You just can't make up
stuff like this, people. Steven Stack of Wayne State University in Detroit,
Michigan, and James Gundlach of Auburn University in Alabama, published
an investigation into the effect of country music on suicide. The study
found that country music, with its emphasis on marital discord, alcoholism
and social alienation, can be linked with an increased suicide rate.
"The results of a multiple regression analysis of 49 metropolitan areas show that the greater the airtime devoted to country music, the greater the white suicide rate," the two researchers found. - Click Here for the Full Story

Music Vet Says Industry is
a Joke
Day in Rock reports: We recently conducted
an interview with veteran guitarist Stuart Smith (Heaven & Earth, Sweet)
for our Inside Track series. In the interview Stuart not only gives us
the inside track on the new Heaven & Earth EP but also delved into
a lot of different areas. While he is currently getting his own record
label off the ground, we had to ask a rather loaded question about his
take of the current state of the rock music business and if he thinks kids
are being cheated. Stuart offered a rather insightful answer. Here is that
portion of the interview. Be sure to click on the full story link for more
on related topics and also learn more about Stuart's new EP and future
plans.
Inside Track: What do you think of the current state of rock? Are the kids being short changed by the current crop of "rock stars"?
Stuart: It's a mess. People who have no right even being on a stage are getting signed and having huge amounts of money put behind them simply because they have a famous sister or are seen on television on a regular basis. I was watching the one of these entertainment shows on television last night and they were interviewing the ex-wife of the guy that Britney Spears is going to marry. She said at the end of the interview that she was now going out as a singer. I can guarantee that by the end of next week she'll have been offered a record deal and will have all kinds of press weather she has talent or not. Just wait and see. The industry is such a joke at the moment. If the major labels would actually get behind someone who could really sing or play and put the massive amounts of promotion and publicity at their disposal into them as they do with half the yo-yo's they sign we'd have some half decent music out there. The trouble is that the industry is run by a bunch of lawyers and accountants and not by people who really have a love of music like Ahmet Ertegun with Atlantic Records did in the old days, they're signing people who have no talent but a high profile for whatever reason.
Yes, I think the kids are being short changed when it comes to the current crop of rock stars. There's no-one really out there right now that's going to be remembered in ten years the way that bands like Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Free, Yes, Pink Floyd and Robin Trower are today. Jimmy Buffett Turns CBS Into
Margaritaville
press release (CBS) reports: When he first
started out, Jimmy Buffett couldn't make it in Nashville, so he drifted

than 30 years later, Buffett tells correspondent Steve Kroft how he was
able to bring his career full circle. Kroft asks, "Did country music rediscover
you or did you rediscover country music?" Buffett responds, "...I think
they rediscovered me.I really don't think I changed much. I'm not 20 years
old anymore and I don't need tohave an image created." Kroft's interview
with Buffett will be broadcast on 60 MINUTES Wednesday, Oct. 6 (8:00-9:00
PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network. [see full story for more]-
