New York Dolls Reunion DVD
Blabbermouth reports: Veteran producer
Kevin Shirley (IRON MAIDEN, DREAM THEATER) has posted the following update
on his web site: "Sad news, the NEW YORK DOLLS bassist and founder, Arthur
'Killer' Kane, died last week, right when I was in the middle of mixing
the DOLLS reunion concert, which was filmed for a DVD release just last
month at the Royal Festival Hall in London. So, we've been watching the
footage of him, and it's sad, and yet thrilling to see how happy he looks,
and terrific that the concert has been captured on film, which will be
a testament to him, of sorts. The concert is definitely very rough and
ready, and very 'punk', but it's a helluva lot of fun to watch!..." [see

Silly News: Sum 41 Profane
Antics
Rockdirt reports: The Calgary Sun reports
that Deryck Whibley and his band Sum 41 were onstage in Calgary, performing
a reportedly drunken, expletive-filled show at the Stampede's Coca-Cola
stage, which saw them forfeit much of their performance fee. Then they
followed that up by performing at Camrose's Stage 13, where Whibley proudly
exclaimed how hungover and drunk he was and then proceeded to launch a
profanity laden verbal barrage at The Tea Party's Jeff Martin. -

Elton Blast US Censorship
ArrowFM reports: Rocker Sir Elton John
has criticized the current US administration for using what he calls "bullying
tactics" to hinder free speech. Specifically referring to stars who are
scared of speaking against the war, John compared the current "fear factor"
to McCarthyism in the 1950s. "There's an atmosphere of fear in America
right now that is deadly. Everyone is too career-conscious," he told the
New York magazine, Interview. "There was a moment about a year ago when
you couldn't say a word about anything in this country for fear of you
career being shot down by people saying you are un-American," he said.

Now, Elton censorship is a bad thing but people, especially stars, are not being denied their right to speak their mind. However, with the political split in the U.S. right now, when you say something of a political nature you run the risk of alienating half of your audience. Even Linda Rondstadt was allowed to speak her mind, and then she suffered that backlash. Then again she's also receiving the most press she has seen in two decades. So if a star feels expressing their views is that important then they should be willing to put their money where their mouth is and take the heat from those that disagree with them. That is part of free speech, standing up for your beliefs. Otherwise it's just empty rhetoric and headline grabbing. That standard should stand for people on both sides of the political fence. Would you censor those that disagree with stars that express their political views?

Nick 13 writes the following: "We are very sorry to announce that our friend
& brother Fred Hell will no longer be playing with Tiger Army, due
to heath reasons stemming from his shooting in March '03. Fred's courage
and hard work has been an inspiration to everyone, but he's just not physically
up to the challenge of touring. There are no hard feelings on the part
of anyone, we're all just thankful for the last three years of playing
together and the fact that Fred's alive. Best of luck to Fred in his continued
recovery and pursuit of musical excellence, he will always be part of the
Tiger Army family." Mike Fasano, who drummed on the band's latest album

Guided By Voices Long Goodbye
Pitchfork reports: You know half the story
by now: On August 25th, Guided by Voices will release their final full-length,
entitled Half Smiles of the Decomposed, on Matador Records. On January
1st, 2005, they will cease to exist as a functioning unit. Realistically
speaking, this is more or less a retirement of nomenclature-- Bob Pollard
has always been the brunt of the band, and the man has already assured
the world that it will be a good while yet before he turns in the towel
as a solo artist. But let's momentarily disregard realism for a somewhat
necessitated bout of rock 'n' roll theatrics: Symbolically speaking, this
is the end of an era. [see full story for a brief history of the band and
dates for their final tour]- Click

a stir at the Aladdin hotel and casino in Las Vegas on Saturday (7/18)
when, during a performance there, she dedicated a cover version of the
Eagles hit "Desperado" to "Fahrenheit 9/11" filmmaker Michael Moore.
According to a Las Vegas Sun report, the audience responded by erupting "into equal parts boos and cheers." Hundreds of fans walked out of the performance, and some reportedly defaced posters of the singer that were on display in the venue's lobby.
Aladdin President Bill Timmins, who was at the performance, reportedly instructed security to remove Ronstadt from the premises and had her belongings brought from her hotel room to her tour bus. - Click Here for the Full Story

The Streets Rip Off
Xfm reports: Musician Michael Gagliano
has sparked controversy with his claims that the new single from The Streets,
Dry Your Eyes', has sampled one of his own songs without permission.
Gagliano claims he first wrote the tune last year on a track called 'Yesterday And Today Pt 1' which was released in 2003 on the album 'Sunshine State' under the name EPIC on Revolver Records.
He's now saying that Streets main man Mike Skinner sampled his song (specifically the opening string arrangement) for Dry Your Eyes' without asking permission and is demanding a cut of the profits and Revolver Records is considering legal action.
