DMB Face Criminal Charges
MTV reports: Authorities in Chicago are
considering criminal charges against the Dave Matthews Band after reviewing
surveillance footage of an August 8 incident in which the group's tour
bus allegedly dumped human waste into the Chicago River.
Police Commander Michael Chasen said he's certain that the band's bus is the culprit, thanks to the footage, which was shot from nearby buildings and shows a bus crossing the bridge as a tour boat passes below. Criminal charges could include violations of public nuisance laws and ordinances to protect public health and safety, according to The Associated Press. Weezer Nix Rubin Songs
Chart Attack reports: Back in December,
[Weezer] were busily recording with superstar producer Rick Rubin (Red
Hot Chili Peppers, Jay-Z, Johnny Cash), but now they've scrapped those
sessions and are starting over from scratch. Since July, Weezer have been
back in the studio with engineer Chad Bamford as they try to finish recording
before Cuomo has to go back to school. With only a couple of weeks left
before millions of bright-eyed, bushy-tailed students trudge back to school
grounds, Cuomo hasn't been around much to discuss the reasons why the band
would make such a drastic decision with such a small time frame in which
to work, but webmaster and Weezer pal Karl Koch discussed the starting
over process on the band's official site.
"The songs being recorded now are not 'brand new'," Koch writes. "They have been worked up since early this year as demos, over the entire springtime, by Rivers. In some cases, they were developed from songs being worked on in '03, but underwent such changes as to now be totally distinct from their origins." Vast Ventures
Day in Rock reports: Jon Crosby of Vast
has been keeping real busy of late. We're not talking touring and recording,
Crosby has been spreading his wings a bit. Thought it would good to highlight
two of his projects here. One, Crosby is now an author. He is about to
release his first book "Turquoise and Crimson". Details are a bit sketchy
but it sounds as if it is a non-fiction Kerouac-esq tome. The book is slated
for release in October (preorders are now being taken, first 200 received
a personalized, numbered and autographed copy. - see full story link)
Rockers writing a book isn't too out of character, but Crosby other major new project is. He has founded a storefront website called 2blossoms, which is billed as "a multi-media sanctuary for artists". It appears the idea behind the project is to give indie artists a place to showcase and sell their material. 100% of the profit goes to the artists, all they have to pay is a $5 monthly membership fee. Not a bad deal! Kudos to Jon for doing this. Click the full story link to check it out, preorder the book and if you are Vast fan you can purchase "Turquoise" and "Crimson" - 2 sets of 10 MP3s for only $2.99 per set. - Click Here for the Full Story

Business
As Usual
reports: [It's Friday, time for Chuck
DiMaria to give us his 2 cents on a burning issue of the day. This week
Chuck uncovers an interesting little policy from a major record company.]
I got this little gem from the Arista website under the 'company policies" link. Arista is a record company, just in case any of you all are wondering. (www.arista.com) They've got Usher and Avril and Outkast, to name a few.
Now, it's a little wordy, but it's worth reading:
UNSOLICITED MATERIALS
Arista does not solicit nor does it wish to receive any confidential, secret or proprietary information or other material from you through the Web Site or Arista's mail and email addresses or in any other way. Any information or material submitted or sent to Arista will be deemed not to be confidential or secret. By submitting or sending information or other material to Arista you represent and warrant that the information is original to you and that no other party has any rights to the material. By submitting or sending information or other material to Arista you grant Arista the royalty-free, unrestricted, world-wide, perpetual, irrevocable, non-exclusive and fully sub-licensable right and license to use, reproduce, modify, adapt, publish, translate, create derivative works from, distribute, perform and display such material (in whole or part) throughout the world and/or to incorporate it in other works in any form, media, or technology now known or later developed. You also warrant that any "moral rights" in posted materials have been waived.
Did you get all that? How's that for a swift kick in the gonads?
Here's the recap, in case any of you missed it: If you send a demo of your music to Arista without them asking for it, you've just given away your rights to the songs. Period, end of story, film at eleven.
So, let me get this straight; a record company doesn't want to hear any of your music? Wow, that makes sense.
And they don't want to hear is so bad that they've decided that the best way to curb your enthusiasm is to steal the songs you've worked so hard to create.
And you wonder why I'm not interested in getting a record deal anymore?
There was a time when that was all I thought about. It was the reason we lived. We wanted that fame; we wanted it so bad that it hurt.
And then comes the realization that getting a record deal is probably the worst thing that can ever happen to you. And the aforementioned statement is proof positive that the record industry is not run by musicians, but rather by lawyers and accountants.
After I read that statement, I wanted to blow chunks all over my keyboard. They don't want your music, and if you send it in, they'll steal it.
Does that mean that if I want a job and I send a company my resume, then they have the right to take my children? That's all a demo tape is when you think about it, it's your band's resume. It is an encapsulation of what you can do.
And these guys are so adamant about not wanting to hear anything you've got that they're willing to steal it from you.
I don't know - something just doesn't make sense here.
