MP3.com
Dead?
Tinfoil Music reports:
The net nearly lost one of its loudest members yesterday, MP3.com. The
multi-million dollar MP3 service was nearly lost because it hadn't renewed
its domain, a $35 charge.
Only the quick wit of an MP3.com member, Steve Cox, saved the servous from a potentially deafening silence.
Cox noticed early yesterday that his page on MP3.com wasn't working. After some investigation he noticed that virtually every page on the site wasn't working, replaced instead with the (evil) Verisign SiteFinder. Cox knew this could mean only one thing, the domain had expired. Cox then purchased the domain within minutes and has saved the service.... for now.
'As I wait I smile, thinking about how the Net's ''Premiere Music Streaming Service'' had to be rescued by.me!'
Domains have a set expiration time. Registrars, the companies that handle registering domain names to customers, will typically send out many reminders to the domain registrant telling them that it is about to expire. One wonders where the reminders went for MP3.com though one should also wonder where the person responsible for this went after his bosses get through with him.
***But that's
not the only recent sign of a slow death of MP3.com. Back on
September 10th f***ed Company reported this "Rumor has it Vivendi/Universal
laid off the remaining MP3.com employees today. Firesale likely for any
remaining assets. Some corporate staff (legal, accounting, etc.) remain."
Ecommerce times further reported a couple days ago that "MP3.com, cut 52
of its 70 employees in early September."

A Perfect
Excuse
siN's metal news
reports: A PERFECT CIRCLE have pulled out of Australia's Big Day Out festival,
reasons being "too complex to explain," according to the festival's organizers.
In an official statement, the organizers wrote, "after previously confirming their appearance in writing, the representatives of A PERFECT CIRCLE have now advised us that for reasons too complex for us to explain, the act will not be performing at the 2004 series of Big Day Out festivals. We are still hoping to convince them to stay on the show but we felt it necessary to bring this to the attention of all concerned before tickets go on sale."
The organizers added,
"We bring you this news with a mixture of disappointment, confusion and
frustration".

Linkin
Park Score Triple
Limp Bizkit's popularity
may be dying down but it appears Linkin Park still has a hold on their
core audience as this report from Digital Noise suggests: Linkin Park's
second full-length album, "Meteora", has been certified triple platinum
by the Recording Industry Association Of America for sales of over three
million copies.
The album, which came out in late March, debuted at Number One on the Billboard album chart with sales of over 810,000 copies in its first week of release. Linkin Park's debut, Hybrid Theory, was the best-selling album of 2001, but took 12 weeks to reach Number One. - Click Here for the Full Story
ZZ
Top Close the Summit
Billboard Reports:
ZZ Top will play the final concert at Houston's Compaq Center, formerly
known as the Houston Summit.
The Nov. 22 show will mark the band's 23rd appearance at the venue, longtime home to the Houston Rockets National Basketball Association franchise. The building will be converted into the Lakewood International Center ministry facility.
"We've been playing the Summit since jump," ZZ Top bassist Dusty Hill said in a statement. "It's been like a second home to us when you consider that, besides the gigs we've done there, all three of us have attended hundreds of games and shows by artists we wanted to see, just like everybody else in Houston."
ZZ Top has played
the arena more than any other musical act, followed by Willie Nelson and
Neil Diamond, who have each performed there 17 times. The Nov. 22 show
-- tickets for which go on sale Saturday (Oct. 11) -- will also mark the
end of the band's current Beer Drinkers and Hell Raisers tour.

There was nothing I hated more than to see a filthy old drunkie, a-howling away at the filthy songs of his fathers and going blurp blurp in between as if it were a filthy old orchestra in his stinking rotten guts. I could never stand to see anyone like that, especially when they were old like this one was.

CD
Copy Protection Cracked
Tinfoil music reports:
Anthony Hamilton's latest release is probably the first REAL copy-protected
CD to be released in the USA. After just 14 days, the copy protection has
been broken.
The copy protection format is called MediaMax CD3, released by SunnComm Technologies. SunnComm is competing directly with Macrovision for this new market created by online piracy. It works by making the true audio tracks difficult to read for computer based players while offering lesser quality Windows Media files that are DRM enabled for use on a computer. However, it's laughably easy to bypass.
Previous attempts to limit copying have been made by modifying the contents of the CD itself, making it less compatable with many newer players as well as virtually all computers. They did this by modifying the CDs table of contents file. This latest version does not, however. It depends on the auto-run feature in many newer operating systems. When a CD is inserted, windows and MacOS will automatically run a specific file on the CD. In the case of the MediaMax CD, a file is run that install a device driver onto the machine. This device driver is what drives the copyright protection. Disabling, or even not installing, this driver will allow the user to rip the CD without a problem.

We already know
the ultimate outcome of the California recall race. But how did TSOL frontman
Jack Grisham do at the polls? According to the California Sec. of
State with 95.4% of precincts reporting Grisham's vote total was at 1,633.
In his home county (Orange County) with 341 of 650 precincts reporting
Grisham vote total was at 154. Which isn't too bad considering he was only
13 spots behind Arnold Schwarzenegger, who easily walked away with 63.85%
of the vote in what is California's most conservative county (he came in
at 47.6% statewide). But Grisham was beat out by Gary Coleman (12,195
Statewide), Larry Flynt (14,673) and porn star Mary Cook (9,461). Then
again, when asked why people should vote for him, Grisham responded, "They
shouldn't". His candidacy was more or less a political statement against
the recall system.
One rather curious name among the 150+ list of candidates was Michael Jackson who managed to get 640 votes statewide, perhaps based on his famous name?

Buckethead Joins Slipknot?
Did Buckethead join
Slipknot? Or did Lit screw up? Not news and not even interesting but Lit
posted some photos from the last NAMM show in their latest online journal
(from back in January way to keep it up guys) that includes a photo of
"some guy from Lit" with Buckethead but the photo caption says "That guy
from Slipknot."
But what about Lit? Rumor has it they have been dropped by RCA following low sales of their last album, but that has not been confirmed. They did play a local Orange County show at the Gypsy Lounge a few months back billed as "SARS". ..- Click Here for the Full Story .
Slow news day with the whole California recall.. and no bitching about this mention of the recall, you couldn't possibly see this as a biased comment as it wasn't printed in the L.A. Times! =)
