Rocker Arrested After Shooting
Blabbermouth reports: Former MEAT PUPPETS
bassist Cris Kirkwood was arrested by federal officials Tuesday morning
(Dec. 30), five days after being shot in the stomach by a post office security
guard.
Kirkwood, 43, was arrested as he left Arizona's Good Samaritan Hospital, where he was taken after he was shot by a post office security guard on Friday (Dec. 26). He was hit with a single charge of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to do bodily harm, according to Harriet Bernick, a spokesperson for the U.S. attorney's office. The felony charge carries a maximum of ten years in prison.
Kirkwood and a woman had apparently been fighting over a parking space in front of a post office in downtown Phoenix on Friday.
Kirkwood made his initial appearance in federal court on Tuesday (Dec. 30) in a wheelchair and hospital gown, grimacing alternately from pain and exasperation, according to the Arizona Republic. His federal public defender, Jane McClellan, said he would spend the night at a federal detention facility in Florence, despite his gunshot wound, and then be returned to federal court today for a detention hearing to determine if he can be released on bond.
"Our position is that Mr. Kirkwood should be detained," Assistant U.S. Attorney Kurt Altman said.
Altman argued that Kirkwood, who has previous drug convictions, would be a flight risk and a danger to the public. Click Here for the Full Story

Clapton, Davis Royally Honored
AP reports: Could Queen Elizabeth II be
a rock 'n roll fan?
Legendary guitarist Eric Clapton and Kinks founder Ray Davies received royal honors Wednesday, becoming Commanders of the Order of the British Empire just weeks after Rolling Stone Mick Jagger picked up his knighthood at Buckingham Palace.
Also among the luminaries singled out for awards in the annual New Year's Honors list were World Wide Web inventor Tim Berners-Lee, who became a knight, and tennis star Tim Henman, made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire, or OBE. Click Here for the Full Story
Cause of Singers Death Inconclusive
AP reports: Tests to determine whether
an Oscar-nominated singer-songwriter was murdered or committed suicide
were inconclusive, a coroner's spokesman said Tuesday.
Elliott Smith, 34, died in a hospital on Oct. 21 after his live-in girlfriend found him in their apartment with a stab wound to the chest. Initial reports indicated the reclusive Smith had stabbed himself, said coroner's spokesman David Campbell.
But an investigation into his death and an examination of his body were unable to determine if the wound was self-inflicted or if Smith was the victim of an attack.
"The coroner's examination determined either scenario was possible," Campbell said.
The Los Angeles Police Department continues to investigate Smith's death, said Officer Jason Lee, a police spokesman.
Smith, who earned a 1998 Academy Award nomination for his song "Miss Misery" from the film "Good Will Hunting," performed it at that year's awards show. The song lost to "My Heart Will Go On" from the film "Titanic." Click Here for the Full Story
Jason Mraz Still Sucks
MTV reports: Jason Mraz has written enough
crappy new songs that he's ready to hit the studio.
"Most of my songs still suck," the breakout singer/songwriter of 2003 said. "That's what you have to do. You have to write about 99 sh... crappy songs see what I did there, I edit 99 crappy songs to get that one good one. So I'm still writing the same really bad songs, and then by the time we get to the studio I should probably have about 12 good ones."
Mraz has pre-production scheduled in January before an overseas tour in February. By spring he hopes to be recording the follow-up to Waiting for My Rocket to Come for release in the fall.
A producer has yet to be determined, but at a recent press conference to announce the Grammy Awards nominations, Mraz had his eye on another artist there.
Before Mraz releases his second major-label studio album, he'll tide fans over with a still-untitled live album and DVD recorded at a recent show in Milwaukee. Click Here for the Full Story
Lars No Longer Bothered By
MP3s
Blabbermouth reports: METALLICA drummer
Lars Ulrich was recently asked by Live Daily for his opinion abut the RIAA
(Recording Industry Association of America) crackdown against Internet
users it says are illegally sharing songs. "I was talking to my manager
Cliff Bernstein about it yesterday on the phone," Ulrich said. "[There
was] something in the New York Times, they were talking about the RIAA
because it made some kind of false premonition that METALLICA was supportive
of the RIAA crackdown. And I sat there and said, 'I've never heard myself
voice support for the RIAA on their crackdown. What am I missing here?
Should I go on the record and defend it?' He goes, 'No, because people
will take what you say and make it whatever they want it to be. You're
sort off***ed.' So Cliff said, 'Well how do you really feel about it?'
And I said, 'Is it possible to not have an opinion?' I actually don't have
one. It's like, as you're driving by the scene of an accident, do you have
an allegiance to the accident that you're watching unfold in front of your
eyes, or are you watching it as a bystander?" Asked how he feels now when
somebody downloads "Frantic", Ulrich said, "When somebody downloads a METALLICA
track, does it bother me? I can't honestly say that it bothers me anymore.
I can't get too wound up about it, because it's not something I control."Click

Victory For A Perfect Murder
Press Release reports: Chicago - Victory
Records is proud to announce the signing of Montreal, Quebec's most aggressive
metalcore band, A Perfect Murder. Formed in 2000 from the ashes of Downfall
of Man and A Death For Every Sin, A Perfect Murder delves deep into the
annals of classic metal for inspiration, drawing from Metallica, Testament
and Pantera as well as groove-based southern legends Crowbar and Down,
flawlessly combining metal, rock, hardcore and thrash to incite complete
mosh pit mayhem and unity in their audience at the same time. Their three-guitar
attack is ballsy to say the least, and vocalist Frank Pellerin emits a
low, screamed growl that is considered the best on the Canadian hardcore
scene.

Tantric Ready To Go
Press Release reports: Maverick recording
artists Tantric have put the finishing touches on their new album AFTER
WE GO, the eagerly awaited follow-up to their 2001 self-titled debut. Recorded
in Nashville with producer Toby Wright (Korn, Alice In Chains), the album
will be released on February 10, 2004.
From their beginnings in Louisville, Kentucky, to the global success of 2001's self-titled debut, Tantric have established themselves as a vital new voice in modern rock. Emerging from the ashes of Days of the New, Tantric went on to score critical acclaim and an ever-expanding fan base by blending creamy acoustic middles with crunchy guitar exteriors and lush vocal harmonies. Fueled by smash hit single "Breakdown" (which shot straight to #1 on Billboard's Modern Rock Tracks chart), Top 10 hit "Astounded" and Top 20 hit "Mourning," the album rocketed to #4 on Billboard's Heatseekers chart, while selling close to a million copies. SARStock DVD
BW&BK reports: Well, at least the
ROLLING STONES portion. Billboard.com reports that The Rolling Stones'
performance at Toronto's Molson Canadian Rocks for Toronto extravaganza
will be released on DVD next spring. Stones tour manager Michael Cohl said
all 13 acts that performed at the July 30 Downsview Park concert were recorded
and should be included in the DVD, but its not known if the entire concert
will be released. "We're hoping by April or May to have it out," Cohl said.
The day-long concert, which was designed to boost Toronto's sagging economy in the wake of the deaths caused by Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), attracted some 450,000 people and also featured AC/DC, RUSH and THE GUESS WHO among others. Cohl added he's not sure if the upcoming DVD will be made available to all retailers; the Stones' recent Four Flicks DVD was sold exclusively by Best Buy and Future Shop, resulting in some stores removing Stones-related merchandise from their racks.
In related news, there are already suspect copies of the three main acts floating around Japan on a label called Bully Original CD And DVD. The DVD features the complete sets of the Stones, AC/DC and RUSH, along with the Rolling Stones Toronto TV Special. Click Here for the Full Story
