Weiland Gets Probation
Much Music Reports:  Scott Weiland has been sentenced to three years probation by a California judge. The Stone Temple Pilots/Velvet Revolver frontman was arrested in May for possession of heroin and cocaine. The 35-year old singer must continue addiction counseling and submit to random drug tests as part of his probation. Weiland's new band Velvet Revolver is a collaboration with former members of Guns 'N' Roses. The group is planning to record their debut album in early fall.  - Click Here for the Full Story

Dylan Upgraded
Billboard Reports: With the Sept. 16 release of 15 classic Bob Dylan albums on the hybrid Super Audio CD format, Columbia/Legacy is initiating an ambitious sonic upgrade of the icon's CD catalog. Five albums in the series are also presented, for the first time, in 5.1-channel surround sound.

Like many current SACD titles, the Dylan series comprises dual-layer discs featuring a high-density layer carrying high-resolution, multichannel surround sound, as well as a two-channel stereo SACD version and a standard 16-bit, 44.1kHz layer. While an SACD player is required for playback of the high-resolution, multichannel layer, hybrid discs are forward- and backward-compatible, allowing playback on standard CD players.

Titles carrying multichannel mixes are "Blonde on Blonde," "Another Side of Bob Dylan," "Bringing It All Back Home," "Blood on the Tracks," "Slow Train Coming" and "Love and Theft." The series also includes "The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan," "Highway 61 Revisited," "John Wesley Harding," "Nashville Skyline," "Planet Waves," "Desire," "Street Legal," "Infidels" and "Oh Mercy.". - Click Here for the Full Story

Iggy, White Stripes To Star in Film
Virgin Reports: The White Stripes have teamed up with veteran New York indie director Jim Jarmusch to star in his next film project. Both Jack and Meg White will play themselves in a feature-length film of self-contained scenes entitled "Coffee and Cigarettes," alongside fellow musicians Iggy Pop, Tom Waits and actors Steve Coogan, Steve Buscemi and Alfred Molina. Jarmusch has already shot three short films in the series (beginning in 1986) and has a long history of hiring musicians as actors, working with Waits, Pop, and the late Joe Strummer, among others.

Audiences also await Jack White's film debut in Anthony Mighella's Cold Mountain (Christmas 2003), in which he stars opposite his current girlfriend Renee Zellweger. We will soon find out which is a harder button to button for Jack White, being a rock star or being a movie star.- Click Here for the Full Story

Stone Temple Hits
Blabbermouth reports:  STONE TEMPLE PILOTS will be releasing a "greatest hits" album, tentatively titled "Thank You", on November 4 through Atlantic Records. The album will feature 14 of the bands hit songs, plus an acoustic version of "Plush" and a new track called "All In The Suit That You Wear". The greatest hits set will draw from STP's five albums: "Core" (1992), "Purple" (1994), "Tiny Music - Songs From the Vatican Gift Shop" (1996), "No. 4" (1999) and "Shangri-La De Da" (2001). In addition, the group will issue a DVD containing all of the band's music videos and about an hour of other live performances and photos, as well as some "home" footage the band has shot over the years. The CD will be available separately or as a CD/DVD package, according to the band's web site. In 2000, the group had planned to release a hits compilation called "Big Bang Babies" but scrapped the record after a management shakeup.

RIAA Won't Sue All
AP Reports: The Recording Industry Association of America says it will not go after small violators when it sues people who illegally share songs on the Internet.

The assurance came in a written response to questions by Minnesota Sen. Norm Coleman, chairman of the Senate Governmental Affairs' Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations. Coleman plans to hold hearings on the  RIAA's campaign, which he has labeled "excessive."

"RIAA is in no way targeting 'de minimis' users," wrote Cary Sherman, the group's president, in a letter the subcommittee released Monday. "RIAA is  gathering evidence and preparing lawsuits only against individual computer users who are illegally distributing a substantial amount of copyrighted music."

Sherman added that his group "does not condone any illegal copying and does not want anyone to think that even a little illegal activity is acceptable."

Sherman did not specify how much illegal distribution constituted "a substantial amount," and an RIAA spokesman declined to quantify the phrase.

UK Album Sales Soar.
The RIAA may be suffering in the US with sluggish sales but things are pumpin in the UK.

Tinfoil reports: A bit of an old piece, but I missed it over the weekend due to 'The Blackout of naught-three'. According to PC Pro, the UK is experiencing an all-time high in album sales, up 12% to 228 million units so far this year. Lower prices (an average of £9.79) are attributed for the all-time highs. Singles are way down, some 41%, but at £4.99, it's not hard to see why.

No Doubt Enters Rag Trade
AP Reports No Doubt singer Gwen Stefani's new fashion brand, L.A.M.B., is making its first mark this fall with a limited-edition collection of handbags and accessories in a partnership with LeSportsac.

L.A.M.B. stands for "love, angel, music, baby"   all words that Stefani says are meaningful to her and are heard often in her songs.

Many of the Stefani-L.A.M.B. for LeSportsac bags are made of black rip-stop nylon and covered with words and phrases in a white gothic
font. The handles graphic-print grosgrain tape are supposed to look like guitar straps.

Of course, there's also a "concert bag," a small 8-by-8 1/2-inch pouch.

"I was flattered that someone would give me the chance to design something. I've designed tons of things for myself, which is no big deal because I'm wearing it. But to do something for other people that's cool,"  the 33-year-old singer said in a statement.

The accessories line will be followed in the spring with a L.A.M.B. ready-to-wear collection that matches Stefani's own fashion aesthetic a mix of "punk and Paris, of rock and roll, or color and pattern."

(Sorry Gwen, but this is about as far from Punk as you can get. Just like your disco single.) - Click Here for Full Story
