Iron
Maiden In Timberlake Video
Iron Maiden has shown up in the most unlikely
of places, a Justin Timberlake video.
Blabbermouth reports: IRON MAIDEN, whose new album, "Dance Of Death", is due on September 9, are set to receive some much-needed MTV exposure from an unlikely source 'N SYNC singer Justin Timberlake. The pop heartthrob's video for his new single "I'm Loving It", which was filmed on the streets of New York City on Sunday (August 10), features Justin chasing after a model who for some peculiar reason is sporting an IRON MAIDEN t-shirt.

System
Of A Down Changing Sound
Total Rock reports: Darion Malakian, guitarist
with System Of A Down, is warning fans to expect a radical shift in sound
on the band's next album. It will, says Malakian, be heavier and more obviously
influenced by eastern music. And don't expect anything new from SOAD until
late in 2004. - Click

Indie
Retailers Sue Best Buy
Billboard Reports: A group of independent
music retailers has filed a class-action lawsuit against Best Buy Co. Inc.,
alleging that the chain violates U.S. antitrust laws, as well as California
state laws, that govern loss-leader selling, the strategy of pricing product
below cost.
In the lawsuit -- filed Aug. 6 in U.S. District Court for the Central District of California, Western Division -- the plaintiffs charge that Best Buy uses its clout to receive benefits from the major labels that are not generally available to the chain's competitors The lawsuit says Best Buy is "able to extract from the major record companies an additional 10% discount vis-a-vis other purchasers" and receives advertising and other allowances not generally granted to other merchants. According to the complaint, these favorable prices, terms and conditions allow Best Buy to sell new albums as loss leaders, diverting massive amounts of business away from its competitors. - Click Here for more info
RIAA
Subpoenas Rejected
Much Music reports: The U.S. music
industry's battle against online piracy was dealt a setback yesterday when
a federal judge rejected subpoenas issued in a lawsuit filed by the Recording
Industry Association of America.
The RIAA sought to force Boston-based university internet servers to release the names of student users that they suspected of engaging in illegal music downloading. The RIAA issued a statement dismissing the judge's ruling as "a minor procedural issue". - Click Here for the Full Story
In related news Tinfoil Music had this story a few days ago: Packard Bell's internet services arm, PBIS, and SBC is declining the RIAA subpoenas saying they are overly broad and not issued out of the correct jurisdiction. PBIS and SBC intend to question the very law that gives copyright holders the right to issue subpoenas, against the RIAA.
SBC contends that the DMCA exploits their customers right to privacy. - Click Here for the Full Story

Gibson's
Digital Guitar
Music Dish reports: Sensing that people
are getting bored of the sound of electric guitars, Gibson has a solution,
one that will appeal to those who also hate getting tangled in patch cables
or the bother of returning their instrument - a digital guitar.
In this new design, the magnetic pickup will be replaced by a computer chip that works through a wireless transmitter (Ethernet). A Gibson spokesperson claims that this will give added versatility to processing the sound and allow "a different effect to each of the six strings."
How the effect of feedback will be created without the use of magnetic pickups or air is absent from their press release. But Gibson swears that this thing will sound bitchin'.
Can you can you say "New Coke?"
Will it sound as real as digital drums?

FBI
Web Police?
Music Dish had this story written by Moses
Avalon: A recent bill introduced to the House Judiciary subcommittee, (H.R.
2517, sponsored by Representative Lamar Smith, R-TX) would allow the Federal
Bureau of Investigations to monitor those composers and record producers
who use elements acquired on the Internet in their music recordings.
The bill suggests that because material protected by copyright is so easily obtainable over the Internet, there needs to be a way to monitor the distribution of content that may end up being infringed upon. Smith's bill would allow the FBI to investigate and "deter" the use of this material. It's presumed that this "monitoring" would lead to arrests.
Several special interest groups are fighting the bill. Mainly, the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA): "The bill as written is troubling for consumers on multiple levels," said CEA President Gary Shapiro. "First, it suggests that any 'unauthorized' home recording is criminal conduct if the content is obtained from the Internet.
Move over RIAA, there's a new sheriff in
town, and he has a bigger gun. - Click
