Day in Pop Report for 03/13/2014
This week, Showbiz 411 has called the foundation's charitable efforts into question after perusing its tax records, which reveal that out of the $2.1 million in net assets, just a mere $5,000 was spent on actual grants and charity donations. What the Born This Way Foundation's tax records do show is that large sums of money were spent on digital "Strategic Consulting" ($300,000), "Legal" ($406,552) and the most eyebrow-raising category of simply "other" (a staggering $808,661). Last year, the Foundation's most visible efforts centered around the "Born Brave Bus Tour," which hit 23 events in 18 cities around the country. more on this story

The band-who kicked off the first night of the iTunes Festival at the Austin fest- performed four news songs off the album including recently released the R&B swinging "Magic," the Bon Iver-sounding "Midnight," "Another's Arms" and "Always in My Head." The latter was a sweet and slow groove that harkened back to their Parachutes days. On the little over 3-minute track, Chris Martin keeps things simple, there's no vocal acrobatics here, singing straight from the heart, "You're always in my head." The band's sixth album, Ghost Stories, a follow-up to their 2011 record-turned comic book, Mylo Xyloto, will be released May 19 on Parlophone. Watch the guys perform the new song here.
On Tuesday (March 11), it was announced that Williams, Kendrick Lamar, Alicia Keys and Zimmer teamed up for the song "It's On Again," which will be featured on the film's original soundtrack. "I'm very excited to be a part of such a powerful collaboration" Keys said in a press release. "This is the next chapter in the Spider-Man legacy and we really feel 'It's On Again' captures the experience, the story-and most importantly-the meaning behind the film, which is that we all have the potential to be extraordinary. There's a little bit of a Super Hero in all of us." more on this story
And it gets better: The video was helmed by filmmaker John Hillcoat, who directed acclaimed western The Proposition (from a Nick Cave script) and The Road (based on a Cormac McCarthy novel). Using a mix of black-and-white and color photography and a series of striking images, Hillcoat pulls richness and complexity out of a song that might have otherwise been mistaken for an agreeable but rather straightforward honky-tonker. Watch it below: Hillcoat shot the video over the course of a month in locations across the U.S., from New York city streets to landscapes in the South and the American West. We see country barns, junkyard lots, prison fences and city skyscrapers alongside faces people who may or may not be 'lost souls'; a hulking Cadillac acts as our guide of sorts, winding down country lanes and pulling into vintage drive-ins. Along the way we also catch glimpses of Cash, both alone and with his late wife June, and of his famous house outside of Nashville, which was later destroyed by fire. "I've been a lifelong fan" of Cash, Hillcoat told the Guardian. "The first film I made was a prison film [Ghosts of the Civil Dead] so there's definitely a connection there with the whole Folsom prison thing. I was also inspired by his voice, which has a truth to it at all times - that's always helped me in terms of working with actors, no matter how big." Watch the video here.
In the under two and a half minute clip, Taylor blows off her boss, Big Machine label head Scott Borchetta (whose ringtone on Taylor's phone just so happens to be A$AP Rocky's "F***in' Problems") for a few "pressing" matters. These matters include painting her nails ("I hate the left hand one"), gabbing with her BFF about a couple that she feels are moving a little too fast ("And that's me saying that," she deadpans) and a little guy advice, which includes listing a guys name you want to block under something weird and unattractive, like "grundle." And of course, the most pressing matter of all, playing with the "princess of kitty town" her Scottish Fold, Meredith, who uses her paw to hang up one final time on Borchetta. more on this story

Some guest stars got really, really into it like Robin Thicke and the guys of One Direction, the latter of whom took their shirts off and did a little snake charming. As dirty as it sounds, it's pretty G-rated. Sorry, Directioners. Some others seemed a little apprehensive like the adorable Ariana Grande, who twirled her hair and did a few Betty Boop style moves for the camera. Clearly, she is a great friend for doing this even though she had her doubts. more on this story
Now, Banks has released the official music video for her latest single, "Brain," released this past January. The mostly black and white clip finds the singer intoning, "Oh, so cool you seem/Blending with that scene/Wearing what you think is hard" from under a gauzy scarf set. Soon enough the stark images of mountains and dreamy kaleidoscopic mirror shots give way to reveal Banks in a rather sexy open-backed dress pleading with her guy to not hurt her brain. As the Shlomo-produced track's intensity increases, dark red Rorschach test-like images flash across the screen, keeping in time with the rhythm of the song. Banks, who is currently on an extensive UK tour, will return to the States in the spring to hit the festival circuit hard, appearing at Coachella, Sasquatch!, Governors Ball and Bonnaroo before heading back overseas for more European dates. Watch the new video here.
Now the song has received a truly epic video treatment with a gleefully over the top clip that finds the video's protagonist getting about as "turned up" as humanly possible before setting off on a hilariously destructive and surreal rampage through an unsuspecting apartment building that turns into one giant party. Much of the destruction begins with his crotch, which blasts through ceilings and even has the power to blow a woman's clothing clean off her body. Soon, the power of the beat has taken over butts, breasts en route to the ultimate house party that's not soon to be forgotten. DJ Snake is set to join Skrillex on his upcoming "Mothership" tour with Dillon Francis, while Lil Jon will team up with superstar DJs Tiesto and Afrojack for AMP Radio's (a Radio.com station) red-hot Amplify 2014 show at L.A.'s Hollywood Palladium on March 22. With 2012-13′s One Last Tour, the trio of Axwell, Sebastian Ingrosso and Steve Angello elevated to an arena-level status rarely experienced by any band, let alone a trio of Swedish DJs spinning euphoric dance music. Engaging new film documentary Leave the World Behind beautifully captures the dazzling spectacle that followed the group as they circled the globe on One Last Tour, hitting 26 countries and playing to more than one million fans on the unexpected farewell jaunt marking the decision to break up when Swedish House Mafia was at the peak of its powers and arguably the biggest band in the world. There's a scene early in the film that finds Axwell sitting on a private plane between shows, contemplating the legacy Swedish House Mafia will leave behind. He imagines a scenario where the group would someday be the subject of a one-hit wonder show, forever remembered as the band that broke up too early, going on to fading degrees of solo success until one of them ends up a crack addict. All tidily summed up with a spin of the band's biggest hit, 2012′s "Don't You Worry Child," which hit No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100. He laughs, but wonders aloud if the band is throwing away "the key to the golden city." Leave the World Behind presents a compelling tale of how the three DJs first came together and in a few short years grew into a global phenomenon over the course of essentially just six singles. What soon becomes apparent is that no one, least of all the DJs themselves, ever really imagined that their brand of purposefully uplifting dance music would play such a pivotal part in breaking the sound in America and help open the floodgates for EDM to become a driving force in U.S. youth culture. Given the group's rocket trajectory, the movie also shows how success and the usual trappings that come with it affected each member, magnifying cracks in their personal and professional relationships into huge chasms that led to the abrupt break-up. An uneasy tension runs through the film as SHM is seen flying around the world, creating magical moments for massive crowds of ecstatic fans from its home base in Stockholm, Sweden to India, Austria, Malaysia and beyond while the band slowly unraveled. It's a stark juxtaposition, with the members openly questioning why it was their last tour, and each one coming to grips with it in their own way. Ultimately, breaking up was the only way they could see to preserve the legacy of the band at its best before it could descend into shattered friendships and the tragic, cliche scenarios of so many "Behind the Music" stories. The agony and ecstasy of worldwide superstardom is set against the DJs' private lives as husbands and fathers, with touching moments like Ingrosso singing a song to his infant daughter via Skype backstage at a show. Personalities shine through; Ingrosso's emotional high energy next to Angello's brooding intensity and Axwell's quiet, contemplative nature. more on this story
Fey, who wrote the original movie, said, "We're coming up next month on the 10-year anniversary of the original movie I can't believe it either. We're going to see if there's any way to get everyone together, but not a movie, sadly. We're all past high school age." Along with Tina Fey, "Mean Girls" starred Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams, Amanda Seyfried, Lacey Chabert and was directed by Mark Waters. more on this story
Towards the end of the night, New Order founder Bernard Sumner took the stage with newer additions Phil Cunningham and Tom Chapman (but not co-founders Stephen Morris or Gillian Gilbert, and certainly not estranged member Peter Hook), joined by poet Mike Garry for a piece called "Saint Anthony," an ode to post-punk impresario Tony Wilson, the co-founder of Factory Records (the label New Order and Joy Division were signed to) and manager of legendary Manchester music club the Hacienda. That set the stage for what came next. Iggy Pop, a towering influence on punk rock and post-punk took the stage for "Californian Grass" from New Order's 2013 album Lost Sirens, an interesting if not obvious choice. After that, things got surreal as the band launched into Joy Divison's "Transmission." If you're of a certain age, or if you obsess over the music from Trainspotting, your mind has been blown by the previous sentence. So, go ahead and skip to the next paragraph. For those of you still with us, here's the deal: New Order rose from the ashes of Joy Division, whose singer Ian Curtis, committed suicide in 1980. Curtis, like everyone in the British punk and post-punk scene, was a huge Iggy fan (and indeed, was said to have listened to Iggy's 1977 album The Idiot right before his death). So, Iggy singing Curtis' lyrics, with Curtis' Joy Divison bandmate? Big, big deal. This was blowing fans' minds in real time, and many of them rushed the stage, which, apparently, is an uncommon occurrence at Carnegie, and put the ushers into a bit of a panic, trying to get everyone to return to their seats (at the beginning of the show, they were attempting to get the audience to follow the venue's "turn off your cellphone" rule to little avail). So, when Iggy and New Order then launched into Joy Divison's "Love Will Tear Us Apart," let's just say that they didn't make any new friends among Carnegie Hall's staff. But they did give fans a moment they'll not soon forget. After that, the New Order members were replaced by the members of Patti Smith's backing band. "Here's a song I did when Joy Division was still around," he said, going into "Sister Midnight" a song he co-wrote with David Bowie from The Idiot, and then went into another song from that album, "Nightclubbing." From there, Patti Smith took the stage accompanied only by a piano player to cover yet another punk rock icon, Lou Reed (an artist who had played the Tibet House benefit several times in the past), to sing his classic ballad "Perfect Day." She followed that with a spoken word piece "New Foal," which appropriately went into "Horses" from her classic 1975 debut album of the same name, and that segued into her raucous version of "Gloria" (also from Horses). The show ended, as all benefits should, with Patti's "People Have The Power," joined by the rest of the artists. More including photos.
